New EDC-MASLD Publication Explores the Effects of PFAS Exposure on the Gut-Liver Axis

A new study co-authored by EDC-MASLD researchers has been published in Enviormental International on the 18 August, 2026.

Title: PFAS exposure alters gut microbiota metabolites associated with hepatic metabolism: a pilot study

Authors: Andi Alijagic, Victor Castro-Alves, Tim Orin Orešič, Maria Martin Grau, Antonio J. Vidal-Puig, Samira Prado, Daniel Duberg, Samira Salihovic, Stefania Carobbio, Matej Orešič and Tuulia Hyötyläinen.

The study investigates how exposure to per-and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) may influence the relationship between the gut microbiota and liver metabolism.

The reserachers found the PFAS exposure can alter metboloites produced by the gut microbiota. These changes may affect important processes in the liver, including how it processes fats and produces energy.

The findings provide new insights into the gut-liver axis and how it may contribute to metabolic effects associated with PFAS exposure.
