Dr. Emma Kasteel is a postdoctoral researcher and scientific project manager at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS), Utrecht University. She is currently involved in the MOMENTUM project, which aims to address the knowledge gaps in the field of micro- and nanoplastics in relation to human health. Her research specifically focusses on the neurotoxic effects of micro- and nanoplastics and the ability of these plastic particles to cross the blood-brain barrier. Before starting her postdoc, Emma obtained her PhD at IRAS in 2021, with a focus on Next Generation Risk Assessment. This entailed in vitro and in silico methods and concentrated on interspecies differences, interindividual variability and integrated approaches.
